The book starts with a business partner killing his co-owner by forcing him to drive off a ledge on a remote trail near Blewett Pass in the Cascades. The head salesman and co-owner of the business has been living beyond his means, and has concocted a clever scheme to defraud the profits from the lumber yard near Cle Elum, Washington.
With the hard-working and much-beloved owner now dead, the surviving partner does not have the skills to keep the lumber company profitable, and after the business is closed, he moves to Canada, changes his name, and remains under the radar by working in a hardware store and living a simple life.
Biodina d’Angelo, a retired piano professor, becomes interested in the effects of music therapy with Alzheimer’s patients and she starts volunteering at a facility, becoming acquainted with the former owner of the lumber yard, now suffering with Alzheimer’s.
Meanwhile, she starts rummaging through boxes of recordings and tapes from her deceased husband’s choral programs that he conducted around the country and overseas.
She finds a record producer who has moved from a large business operation he owned in Bellevue, Washington to a unique spot on the Teanaway River, outside Cle Elum, Washington.
He shares that he can use his equipment to take her tapes and records and place them on CDs, so she can enjoy them in her leisure time.
While visiting his large facility on multiple locations, she notices the underlying tension exhibited by one of the performers, as well as the receptionist and the owner’s wife.
Biodina befriends the Alzheimer’s patient as she brings in music that enlivens him for short periods of time, when he is lucid, and shares shocking information about his past life.
It leads her to investigating from his revelations, and she determines that he was a thief as well as a murderer.
As the record producer’s business becomes in jeopardy due to the macinations of some of the females involved with the record producer, Biodina becomes a valued sounding-board and friend.
From her keen observations and intuitiveness, as well as downright nosiness, she solves his murder.
She loses two friends, a murderer and a murdered.
