Amateur sleuth Biodina d’Angelo and her husband board a cruise ship in Miami for a week’s vacation in the Caribbean. On the pool deck, Biodina eavesdrops on a heated conversation where she hears cruise personnel discussing a problem with “the exchanges.” She immediately assumes an illegal transaction, likely drugs.
On the second day of the cruise, she notes that her favorite waitstaff person is missing, and gets conflicting answers from the waiter as to his disappearance. Her suspicions are confirmed when his drowned body is discovered with ligatures on his neck.
An intriguing smuggling operation from Brazil of “fancy” diamonds is uncovered, partially by the efforts Biodina takes with the local police in reporting the missing man and by the clues she uncovers.
During the week, the philandering ship captain is also murdered, with an initial determination of a heart attack, but the autopsy determines he consumed an unusual poison. The police are drawn away from the smuggling operation when Biodina is reminded that poison by murder is more typically a woman murderer’s choice.
Cleverly, she determines whether the murderess is the wife, the current female interest, or a long-ago scorned lover.
